Description:
Hydroxy bosentan is a drug used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and is often used in combination with other drugs. Hydroxy bosentan binds to the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor and blocks the binding of sildenafil, which is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. This leads to an increase in cGMP levels and improved blood flow in the lungs. Hydroxy bosentan has been shown to be safe for use in pediatric populations, although it can have adverse effects on liver function. Hydroxy bosentan's pharmacokinetic properties are dependent on renal function, as they are eliminated through the kidneys. There is also evidence that hydroxy bosentan may be taken up by red blood cells, leading to increased plasma concentrations.
