Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat pain, inflammation, and stiffness in muscles. The 5'-hydroxy metabolite of meloxicam has been shown to be as potent as the parent compound. Meloxicam binds to the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes and blocks their activity, inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. The 5'-hydoxy metabolite of meloxicam also inhibits microbial transformation by acting on nitrate reductase. It has been shown that this product can inhibit the growth of filamentous fungi such as Fusarium moniliforme and actinomycetes such as Streptomyces sp., although it is not active against bacteria or yeast.
