It is an antibiotic with a yellow color and has been shown to be orally active. 4-Hydroxynitrofurantoin has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity that includes gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, and fungi. This compound also has a number of oxidative metabolites that have been identified through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
