Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks the production of stomach acid. It is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes to various metabolites. These metabolites are excreted via urine or bile into the environment and can be detected in wastewater. Omeprazole has been shown to inhibit the metabolism of metformin, lormetazepam, and mesocosm. Omeprazole also inhibits degradative enzymes such as human liver hydroxylase and erythromycin-N-demethylase. In addition, omeprazole can induce biotransformation products such as carbamazepine and fluconazole through enzyme inhibition.
