Description

cis-Hydroxy praziquantel is an anthelmintic drug that is used in the treatment of tapeworms. It is a prodrug that is metabolized to praziquantel, its active form, by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver. cis-Hydroxy praziquantel can be administered orally and has been shown to have an uptake rate of about 20% when incubated in rat plasma. The pharmacologic effects are primarily due to the enantiomer of cis-Hydroxy praziquantel, as the molecule has a dipole with a positive charge on one end and a negative charge on the other. cis-Hydroxy praziquantel has been shown to have cardiotoxic effects at high dosages, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cardiac potassium channels.
