(-)-(3S)-3-Hydroxy quinine is a drug that has been shown to interact with other pharmaceuticals. It is metabolized by cyp3a4, an isozyme of cytochrome P450 found in the human liver and intestine. The enzyme activity of cyp3a4 can be inhibited by drugs such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, grapefruit juice, and cimetidine. (-)-(3S)-3-Hydroxy quinine has a half-life of two hours in humans. The pharmacokinetic properties of this drug are determined by the glomerular filtration rate and blood sampling frequency. (-)-(3S)-3-Hydroxy quinine inhibits protein synthesis in experimental models of malaria infection during pregnancy.
