Rimantadine is an antiviral drug that inhibits the influenza virus by preventing the uncoating of the virus, which blocks the release of new virus particles from infected cells. 3-Hydroxy rimantadine is a metabolite of rimantadine and has been shown to be effective against influenza A but not B. 3-Hydroxy rimantadine binds to activated human neutrophils and is converted to hypochlorous acid, which then reacts with nitrous acid to form nitrosphingosin, a reactive intermediate that can react with proteins and nucleic acids in vitro. The plasma concentrations of 3-hydroxy rimantadine have been found to be higher than those of rimantadine in humans.
