Description

4-Hydroxy trimethoprim is an aminopyrimidine derivative that is used as a co-drug in combination with trimethoprim to treat urinary tract infections. Trimethoprim and 4-hydroxy trimethoprim inhibit the production of folic acid, which is important for bacterial growth. This inhibition prevents the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid and tetrahydrofolate, which are required for the synthesis of DNA. Trimethoprim and 4-hydroxy trimethoprim also inhibit the synthesis of purines, which are necessary for RNA synthesis.
