12-(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12(S)-HETE) is an unsaturated fatty acid that is formed by the hydrolysis of arachidonic acid. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo, as well as inhibitory properties on guanine nucleotide-binding proteins, integrin receptors, and polymerase chain reaction. 12(S)-HETE also has pro-apoptotic properties, which are mediated by a decrease in intracellular calcium levels. This compound has shown to regulate the mitochondrial functions of 3t3-l1 preadipocytes and HL-60 cells.
