3-Hydroxyglutaric acid is a metabolic intermediate, which is synthesized from the degradation of glutaric and 3-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid. It has been shown to be an important metabolite in the pathways of energy metabolism and synthesis. 3-Hydroxyglutaric acid can be used as a diagnostic for metabolic disorders such as mitochondrial disorders, lysosomal storage diseases, and fatty acid oxidation disorders. 3-Hydroxyglutaric acid has also been found to activate ATP binding cassette transporters that are responsible for transporting substances across cell membranes.
