2-Hydroxyimino-3-pentanone is a solvent that is used to dissolve other substances. It has been shown that this compound can be used to dissolve the imine functional group in protonated form. 2-Hydroxyimino-3-pentanone interacts with electron donating groups such as carbonyl, nitrile, and hydroxyl groups. The interaction between 2-hydroxyimino-3-pentanone and these functional groups was studied using cyclic voltammetry and single crystal x-ray diffraction. It was found that the solvents lipophilicity could be decreased by adding electron withdrawing groups such as sulfonate, carboxylate, or phosphate groups. This compound has also been found to have physicochemical properties that make it suitable for perfusion studies and brain uptake experiments.
