5-Hydroxymethyl flucloxacillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin that has been shown to be effective against staphylococcal infections. It is structurally similar to the natural penicillin, flucloxacillin, but has a methyl group at position 5 on the benzene ring. This change in structure is thought to be responsible for its high cytotoxicity and increased activity against leukocytes. 5-Hydroxymethyl flucloxacillin binds to bacterial LTA (leukocyte antigen) and inhibits erythrocyte invasion by neutrophils. The drug also has an immune reaction with human serum proteins, which may cause an allergic reaction.
