3-Hydroxymethyl-(1-oxy-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrroline) is a paramagnetic molecule that readily forms complexes with metal ions. It has been shown to have a variety of applications in biophysics, including the conformational changes of proteins and other biomolecules. The structure and properties of 3-hydroxymethyl-(1-oxy-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrroline) can be modelled using quantum mechanics simulations. The molecule exhibits resonance in the paramagnetic resonance spectrum at 4.4 ppm due to the presence of unpaired electrons on the nitroxide group. Experimental studies have shown that 3-hydroxymethyl-(1-oxy-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrroline) binds to DNA by interacting with nucleic acid bases and inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis.
