2-Hydroxymethylpyrrole is a nitrogen-containing compound that has been shown to have antioxidative activity. It is used as a health care product and can inhibit the damage caused by lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 2-Hydroxymethylpyrrole reacts with alkanolamines to form nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic and have an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. The reaction with nitric acid forms hydroxylamine, which is also carcinogenic and has an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. Hydroxylamine reacts with chloride ions to form hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive and can cause lung damage if inhaled. 2-Hydroxymethylpyrrole crystallizes in the orthorhombic system; X-ray diffraction studies show it to be activated at neutral pH. The pyrrolic metabolites of this compound are dioxopiper
