Lidocaine is a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug. It is used clinically to treat arrhythmias, as well as for the prevention and treatment of pain. Lidocaine is a competitive inhibitor of sodium channels in nerve cells, which leads to a decrease in the conduction of nerve impulses and an inhibition of depolarization. Lidocaine binds extensively to plasma proteins, including albumin, both in vitro and in vivo. In human studies, lidocaine has been shown to have pharmacological effects on human liver tissue samples that are prepared by perfusion or with urine samples. The calcium concentrations in the liver cells were decreased after exposure to lidocaine. The clinical use of lidocaine has been studied by administering it to patients with various health conditions such as diabetes mellitus and renal failure. This drug also affects human liver cells where it inhibits protein synthesis and phosphorylation processes involved in metabolism.
