Hygrine is a nitrogenous heterocyclic organic compound that is a methyl ketone. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes and was used as a model system for studying the effects of chemical structure on p450 activity. Hygrine has also been shown to have insect-repelling properties, which may be due to its ability to interfere with the synthesis of chitin, an important component in insect exoskeletons. The asymmetric synthesis of hygrine was achieved by using soybean extract as a starting material, and hydrochloric acid was used as an acidic catalyst. This method has been successfully applied to analyze urine samples.
