RAC is a reactive metabolite of valproic acid. It is produced from the metabolism of valproic acid by human liver enzymes, including dehydrogenases and flavonol glycosides. RAC can also be generated through the reaction of sodium salts with fatty acids, which may account for its high concentration in food. RAC has been shown to have drug reactions, including human liver damage and metabolic disorders. The level of RAC is elevated in humans when they are suffering from fatty acid oxidation disorders such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or mitochondrial diseases such as Leigh syndrome. The levels of RAC can be measured by LC-MS/MS methods or by monoclonal antibodies that detect it specifically.
