1,2-Hydrazinedicarboxylic acid diethyl ester (1,2-HDCDE) is a synthetic drug that belongs to the group of steroids. It has been shown to be an effective hypoglycemic agent in animal models. 1,2-HDCDE has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. 1,2-HDCDE binds to phospholipids on the bacterial cell membrane and disrupts membrane integrity by acting as an alkylating agent. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents and eventual cell death.
