4-Hydroxy-5-methyl-2-methylene-3(2H)-furanone is a metabolite of methyl ethyl alcohol that has been detected in human urine samples. It can be used as an analytical marker for the detection of alcohol abuse. The 4-hydroxy group of 4-hydroxy-5-methyl-2-methylene-3(2H)-furanone is derived from the hydroxylation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which is a product of the breakdown of carbohydrates. The presence of this compound in urine indicates that the person has consumed alcohol or other beverages containing methyl ethyl alcohol. The application of kinetic data to rat liver microsomes and solid catalysts has shown that 4 hydroxy 5 methyl 2 methylene 3(2H) furanone is formed by the action of cytochrome P450 on 5 hydroxymethylfurfural. This study also found that 4 hydro
