5-Hydroxyindole-3-acetamide (5HIAA) is an endogenous metabolite of serotonin that is excreted in the urine. 5HIAA can be used as a marker of serotonin metabolism in human serum and urine samples. It has been shown to have a peroxidase-like activity with aromatic amines, which converts them to their corresponding azo compounds. This conversion can be monitored using chromatographic methods, such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC). The reaction mechanism is not well understood, but some evidence suggests that it involves a free radical mechanism with oxygen.
