5-Hydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid is a chemical species that belongs to the group of p-hydroxybenzoic acids. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of dopamine and melanin. 5-Hydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro, which may be due to its ability to promote apoptosis. This compound also inhibits the production of eumelanin, which is responsible for black pigmentation in mammals. 5-Hydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to have anti-cholinergic properties and can be used for the treatment of chronic schizophrenia. 5HICA has also shown to have antioxidant properties due to its ability to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation.
