3-Hydroxy-2-pyridinemethanol HCl is a prostanoid that inhibits the synthesis of the eicosanoids (prostaglandins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes) by inhibition of the enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. It has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation in human serum and may be useful in the treatment of coronary artery disease. 3-Hydroxy-2-pyridinemethanol HCl also has activity against tuberculosis and swainsonine toxicity. The chemical is synthesized from acetaldehyde or acetone, which are oxidized to form acetaldehyde or acetone alcohols respectively. These alcohols are then oxidized to form aldehydes and finally amines. The amines react with an acid chloride to form 3-hydroxy-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid esters, which undergo hydrolysis to yield 3-hydroxy
