Description:

Hexamethyldisilane (HMDS) is a chemical compound that has the formula SiH(CH3)2. It is an aliphatic organosilicon compound and can be used as a precursor to other silicon compounds, such as polysilanes. Hexamethyldisilane is synthesized by the thermal decomposition of hexamethyldisiloxane, which in turn is obtained by the hydrolysis of trimethylchlorosilane. Hexamethyldisilane is a volatile liquid with a boiling point of -44 °C and a density of 1.5 g/cm3 at 20 °C. The nmr spectra show four distinct peaks, due to the methyl groups on each silicon atom. Activation energies are low for reactions involving HMDS molecules, which indicates that these reactions are exothermic.
