N-Hexanethiol is a low potency chemical that has been used as a model system for detergent compositions. It is chemically stable and has been shown to be an effective agent against infectious diseases, such as HIV, hepatitis C, and herpes. N-Hexanethiol is also used in the flow assay for nucleotide metabolism and to study the mechanism of virus infection. N-Hexanethiol binds to the hydroxyl group on the fatty acid side chain of lipids, which is important for its detergent properties, and air entrainment. The kinetic energy of this molecule's reaction with the hydroxyl group causes it to form a covalent bond with the fatty acid chain. This process is known as "hydrolysis." N-Hexanethiol can also react with nucleotides during hybridization reactions to form a phosphoramide bond. These reactions are reversible because they require no activation energy.
