2-Heptylfuran (2HF) is a volatile oil that is found in many plants, animals, and foods. 2HF has been shown to have antiviral and antioxidant properties. It also has been shown to inhibit the growth of herpes simplex virus in animal models. 2HF inhibits lipid peroxidation by reacting with free radicals and other reactive oxygen species in the cell membrane and tissues. This compound also has been shown to protect against oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activation of caspases 8 and 9, as well as inhibiting inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). 2HF may also be involved in the metabolism of fatty acids by competing with enzymes for substrate binding sites.
2HF can react with fatty acid substrates to form reaction products that are active against tumor cells and may contribute to carcinogenesis.
