4-Hydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid (4HMB) is a molecule that has been identified as the active component in the traditional herbal remedy Tuberculostatin, which has been used to treat tuberculosis. 4HMB is metabolized into orsellinic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which are also found in plants. The molecule has a tuberculostatic effect and appears to inhibit protein synthesis by affecting RNA polymerase activity. It also inhibits the formation of acid in human populations, which may be due to its ability to bind to DNA. The effects of 4HMB on human health have not yet been studied extensively, but it does appear to have some beneficial effects for people with cancer who are receiving radiation therapy.
