This product is a cationic surfactant that is used as a conditioning agent in the textile industry. 2,2'-[4-(2-Hydroxyethylamino)-3-nitrophenylimino]diethanol (HAED) has been shown to induce hyperostosis and carcinogenesis in CD-1 mice. HAED has also been observed to cause an increase in the incidence of liver tumors in rats, although it does not appear to be carcinogenic in humans.
HAED is metabolized through hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. The metabolic profiles of HAED have been determined using a variety of methods including gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC/HRMS), and nuclear magnetic resonance spect
