4-b-Hydroxyethylsulfonyl sulfate aniline-2-sulfonic acid (4bHSSA) is a sulfuric acid with a hydroxyl group at the b position. It can be used as a precursor in the preparation of sulfonated polystyrene. 4bHSSA can also be used to prepare benzene sulfonic acid, which is an intermediate in the production of sulfuric acid. When it reacts with sodium hydroxide, 4bHSSA forms benzene sulfonic acid. The reaction liquid is neutralized by hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid to produce 4bHSSA and sodium chloride or sodium sulfate respectively.
