Description:

4-Hydroxy-7-(phenylamino)-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (4HNPS) is a low energy radiation dye that has been shown to be effective in the detection of naphthalene. It can be used as a colorant to make polyvinyl chloride products and as a reactant in the production of diazonium salts. 4HNPS is also an optical dye, which exhibits strong absorption bands at 450 nm and 590 nm. The reaction mechanism for 4HNPS is a substitution reaction, where the hydroxyl group on the molecule reacts with an electron pair from the electron-rich aromatic ring. This reaction results in the formation of an unstable, highly reactive intermediate called a radical cation. When this radical cation encounters another electron pair, it reacts quickly with it to form a stable product called an excited state of 4HNPS. The light emitted by this excited state is characterized by its long wavelength and
