Hexadecenylsuccinic anhydride is a surfactant that is used as a monomer in coatings and as an additive in plastics. It is also used as a functional group to modify polycarboxylic acids, which are used in the production of lubricants and hydraulic fluids. Hexadecenylsuccinic anhydride has been shown to react with ferrocene, forming a hydrophobic surface that is resistant to water and hydrocarbons. Hexadecenylsuccinic anhydride can also be used as a reactive diluent for fatty acid esters.
