6-Hydroxybenzofuran is a prenylated aromatic compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of norepinephrine and epinephrine. The chemical structure of 6-hydroxybenzofuran includes an amino group, a benzene ring and a hydroxyl group. Binding studies have shown that 6-hydroxybenzofuran has an affinity for amino transferases. It also inhibits the enzyme PTP1B, which is involved in the regulation of insulin secretion. In addition, 6-hydroxydbenzofuran has been found to cause neuroprotection by inhibiting the uptake of dopamine into brain cells and reducing oxidative stress.
