(4S)-4-Hydroxy-L-isoleucine is a novel synthetic anti-inflammatory agent that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. This drug is derived from L-isoleucine and has been shown to inhibit proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL6). The structure of this drug was determined by X-ray crystallography. The synthesis of this compound starts with the condensation reaction between 3,5-dichloroacrylic acid and hydroxyacetone. The product is then purified by means of column chromatography, yielding 4S-(3,5-dichloroacrylic acid)-4-(hydroxyacetone)l--L-isoleucine.
