D-Histidine is a substrate molecule that has high values in wild-type strains. D-Histidine is involved in the suzuki coupling reaction, which is a metal chelate that binds to DNA. This binding prevents the production of an antimicrobial peptide and gamma-aminobutyric acid. The uptake of D-histidine by cells has been shown to be dependent on the group p2 transport system and the transfer reactions are facilitated by L-histidine. Women can produce histamine from D-histidine and this conversion may be increased in women with chronic fatigue syndrome. In humans, mitochondrial DNA contains a high percentage of histidine.
