Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that can be found in plant and animal tissues. It breaks down hyaluronic acid, a component of the extracellular matrix in connective tissue, by hydrolyzing its glycosidic bonds. Hyaluronidase is used for the treatment of eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, and to prevent kidney fibrosis after myocardial infarct. The enzyme also has been shown to reduce skin cancer growth in mice by breaking down the hyaluronic acid that binds to DNA and prevents apoptosis. Hyaluronidase is not active against bacteria or fungi but can be used as a marker for human serum when applied on bacterial cultures. The enzyme can also be used as a marker for water permeability in polymers, due to its ability to degrade the polysaccharide chains of the matrix.
