Hippuric acid is a naturally occurring by-product of the metabolism of benzoic acid. It is also found in the urine and other bodily fluids as a product of the breakdown of toluene. Hippuric acid has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species. The study of hippurate in biological samples has been used as a marker for carcinoid syndrome. Hippurate is excreted in the urine after it is metabolized by bacteria in the bowel or liver. Hippurate can be detected using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which involves passing an electric current through a fluid sample and measuring its resistance to this current. The presence of hippurate can be confirmed by measuring its concentration with high-performance liquid chromatography.
