- L-Benzylalanine
L-Homophenylalanine is a pharmaceutical drug that is an ester hydrochloride. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme L-homoserine dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion of L-homoserine to L-homocysteine. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to a decrease in the synthesis of glutathione, a compound that protects cells from oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species and other toxic molecules. L-Homophenylalanine has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in prostate cancer cells and has been used as a chemical probe for asymmetric synthesis. It also inhibits the activity of polymerase chain reaction, which is an important technique for DNA amplification.
L-Homophenylalanine is produced by corynebacterium glutamicum, which can be found in many different environments. In some cases, it can be found with glutamate dehydrogenase and racemase enzymes that are needed for its production. This product inhibits
