4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid is a metal chelate with a molecular formula of C8H11NO2. It is used as an analytical reagent and is commercially available in the form of its sodium salt. 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid reacts with halides to form trihalide salts, which can be determined by titration calorimetry, redox potential measurements, or x-ray crystal structures. This compound also acts as a ligand for metal ions such as copper(II), iron(III), and nickel(II). 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid has been used to prepare glycol ethers that are soluble in water.
