p-Hydroxyhippuric acid is a phenolic acid that is produced by the microbial metabolism of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. It has been shown to have biological properties and is a metabolite of benzoic acids, which are found in many foods. p-Hydroxyhippuric acid has a low bioavailability and can be detected in postprandial plasma samples. It is also present in urine samples and can be used as an analytical tool for diagnosis. The analytical method for this compound involves the extraction of urine samples with 1N hydrochloric acid followed by the addition of 10% sodium hydroxide solution and heating at 60°C for 2 hours. The resulting mixture is then cooled, diluted with water, and filtered through a filter paper. This filtrate is analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
