L-homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid derived from methionine that is present in the human body at physiological levels. High concentrations of homocysteine have been associated with coronary heart diseases, and homocysteine may be involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Homocysteine can react with nitric oxide to form an anion radical that scavenges free radicals such as peroxynitrite, thereby reducing oxidative injury. Homocysteine also inhibits the synthesis of collagen and lysyl oxidase. L-homocysteine has been shown to scavenge hydroxyl radicals, which are important for lipid peroxidation reactions, and it has antioxidant effects on LDL oxidation.
