4-Hydroxy-a-oxobenzeneacetaldehyde (HABA) is a reactive, basic protein that is found in kidney beans. It has been shown to bind to the peptide binding site of monoclonal antibodies and thus inhibit their function. HABA also has an inhibitory effect on the uptake of adenine nucleotides by cells, which may be due to its ability to compete with ATP for binding sites on cell membranes. The inhibition of ATP uptake leads to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell division. 4-Hydroxy-a-oxobenzeneacetaldehyde also binds to human serum albumin and hemolytic activity, which may be due to its ability to cleave peptide bonds. This compound is also reactive and can cause damage to tissues and organs, such as the kidneys.
