4-Hydroxymethyl-1-trityl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)methanol is a triphenylmethyl derivative. It is an organic compound that can be synthesized in two steps from the respective starting materials, 1-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine and triphenylmethyl chloride. The compound has been used as a reagent for the synthesis of esters and anhydrides. It has also been used to prepare dimethyl chloroacetate from methylamine and chloroacetic acid. 4HMTI has also been used as a precursor to other functional groups by reaction with hydrazine or chlorine. The chloride ion present on 4HMTI can be replaced by bromide, iodide or fluorine to give compounds that are used as ligands in coordination chemistry research.
