4-Hydroxy-3-nitrocoumarin (4HNC) is a synthetic compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with the reaction products of copper complex with coumarin derivatives. 4HNC has an intramolecular hydrogen bond and a frequency shift, which can be seen on spectroscopy. The crystal structure of 4HNC has been determined using x-ray crystallography. This active form inhibits bacterial growth by interacting with the carboxylate group in the enzyme nitro reductase and hydroxyl group in soybean lipoxygenase. It also inhibits biological properties such as nitric oxide production and lipid peroxidation, which are important factors in inflammation. 4HNC shows potent inhibitory activity against nitro, soybean lipoxygenase, and other enzymes involved in inflammatory processes.
