  • Benzenecarbothioamide, 2-hydroxy-
Description:

2-Hydroxythiobenzamide is a thiourea drug that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to peptide and amide groups in the bacterial cell wall. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of coliforms and other Gram-negative bacteria, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Enterobacter cloacae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. 2-Hydroxythiobenzamide is used in tissue culture to prevent the overgrowth of non-target organisms. This drug also has anti-inflammatory effects on bowel disease and may be effective against inflammatory bowel disease. 2-Hydroxythiobenzamide binds to cells in the bowel with high affinity, thereby inhibiting mitochondrial functions by blocking oxidative phosphorylation. This leads to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential, which decreases ATP production and leads to cell death. 2-Hydroxythiobenzamide also inhibits congestive heart failure through its inhibition of xanthine oxidase activity
