L-7-Hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid is a chiral reagent that can be used to study the optical properties of amides. It is also useful as a buffer due to its ability to reversibly bind water molecules. L-7-Hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid has been shown to react with isothiocyanate in the presence of an amino acid to form an optical isomer. The conformation of the amino acid determines which isomer will be formed. When it reacts with L-(+)-serine and L-(+)-alanine, it forms D-(+)-serine and D-(+)-alanine respectively. When it reacts with D-(+)-serine and D-(+)-alanine, it forms L-(+)-ser
