4-Hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid is a quinoline derivative with potent antibacterial activity. It has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This drug also has anti-HIV activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to HIV receptors and inhibit the virus' entry into cells. 4-Hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid has been shown in vitro to inhibit the replication of HIV in human T cells, macrophages, and lymphocytes.
