(S)-4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane is a nucleophilic compound that inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). It selectively binds to adenine in the viral DNA, which prevents the formation of hydrogen bonds with guanine. The compound is potent and has been shown to be effective against HSV-1 in cell culture. (S)-4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane can be used as a sequential treatment for HSV infections. This drug is a sodium salt and can be made by reacting triflate with 2-amino-6 chloropurine followed by alkylation with mesylate or trityl.
