2,2,3,3,4,4,4-Heptafluoro-1-butanol is a linear polyether with a molecular weight of 254. The chemical structure of the molecule contains two hydroxyl groups and one trifluoroacetyl group. 2,2,3,3,4,4-Heptafluoro-1-butanol has been shown to form films that are stable at high temperatures and pressures. It also undergoes homogeneous polymerization under basic conditions. Hydrogen fluoride is used as an activating agent in this process because it removes the hydrogen atoms from the hydroxyl groups on the 2,2,3,3,4,4-heptafluoro-1-butanol molecules. This allows for cationic polymerization to take place.
The physical properties of 2HFB depend on the environmental conditions. For example when exposed to air or radiation at room temperature for an extended period of time
