2-(Heptafluoropropoxy)hexafluoropropyl Trifluorovinyl Ether (HFEPVE) is a fluorinated vinyl ether that is used as a reagent for the preparation of sodium carbonate. HFEPVE can be synthesized by catalytic thermolysis of vinyl ether and sodium fluoride in the presence of water vapor. The yields are high and the reaction does not produce any toxic byproducts. The preparative method involves adding HFEPVE to a solution of sodium carbonate dissolved in water with additives, irradiating it with ultraviolet light, and then alkaline hydrolyzing the mixture to produce sodium carbonate.
