1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (1HMIMBF4) is a nonaqueous ionic liquid that is a useful solvent for organic synthesis. 1HMIMBF4 has been used as a reaction medium for the preparation of potassium hexafluorophosphate, which can be used as a fertilizer. 1HMIMBF4 has also been used to study the thermodynamics of metal surfaces and electrochemical studies. The compound has a viscosity of 2.6 mPa·s at 25 °C and solubility data in water, chloroform, ether, and hexane. NMR spectra show that it consists of two protons on the methyl group and one proton on the imidazole nitrogen atom.
