2-Hydroxy-5-nitropyrimidine is a supramolecular compound that is structurally related to 2,6-diaminopyrimidine. The compound was synthesized by reacting 2,3,6-trichloropyridazine with the nitro group of 5-hydroxybenzonitrile. The molecular structure of this compound consists of three fused five membered rings (pyrimidine) and one six membered ring (benzene). Structural analysis revealed that this molecule has hydrophobic functionalities and a chromophore. It also has nitro groups that are responsible for its antibacterial activity against trichomonas vaginalis.
In addition, the ligand can be envisaged as a potential drug candidate for the treatment of cancer metastasis and inflammation. Further studies on 2-Hydroxy-5-nitropyrimidine are required in order to explore its potential as an anticancer drug.
